The Lumicon Giant Easy Guider (GEG) is an 80mm multi-coated off-axis guider with a focal reducer for large SCTs. It connects by threading a base ring onto the telescope, inserting the unit, and tightening the thumbscrews. It allows for off-axis guiding while reducing the focal ratio (e.g., to f/5.5 or f/4) using a reducer lens placed before or after the prism.
Key Setup and Operation Instructions:
- Installation:Thread the attachment ring onto the back of the telescope (11" or 14" SCTs), insert the Giant Easy-Guider, and tighten the three brass thumbscrews.
- Imaging Train:Attach the camera using a T-ring. The unit acts as a 2" extension tube. For faster focal ratios (f/4), an optional 2" extension tube can be added.
- Reducer Placement:The included 80mm reducer lens can be inserted into the front (facing the scope) or rear (facing the camera) positions of the guider to achieve different focal reduction factors.
- Focusing:Achieve focus on a distant daytime object. Focus the main camera first, then adjust the pick-off prism/guide camera position until the guide star is in focus.
- Guiding:The pick-off prism brings a guide star to a side port. If guide stars are not easily found, adjust the position of the guide camera in its holder and rotate the unit.
- Shimming:If needed to ensure guide stars are visible, place small pieces of tape as shims on either side of the front edge of the prism holder.
Operational Modes:
- f/10 (No Reduction):Remove the reducer lens. No extension tube required.
- f/6.5 - f/7.5:Insert the reducer lens in the "rear" position.
- f/5.5 - f/4:Use the reducer in the front position, optionally with a 2" extension tube for faster focal ratio
