The Criterion 16.3mm Erfle is a classic vintage wide-field astronomical eyepiece designed for 1.25" focusers. Its 16.3mm focal length provides a useful medium-power view, while the Erfle optical design offers a wider apparent field than traditional narrow-field designs such as many classic Kellner or Plössl eyepieces. This highly regarded vintage eyepiece is an excellent choice for deep-sky observing, open star clusters, lunar viewing, and general-purpose astronomical use. Historical astronomy sources identify the Criterion 16.3mm Erfle as optically related to the Gailand/Galoc 16.3mm and University Optics 16mm versions.
Function: The eyepiece determines the magnification according to the focal length of the telescope. For example, when used with a 1000mm focal-length telescope, the 16.3mm eyepiece produces approximately 61x magnification. Its wider-field Erfle design provides a more expansive view than many traditional narrow-field eyepieces, making it especially useful for extended deep-sky objects and star fields.
