The iOptron HAE43C Dual AZ/EQ SWG is a lightweight, high-performance hybrid mount head that supports both Alt-Azimuth (AZ) mode and Equatorial (EQ) mode operation. It uses state-of-the-art strain-wave-gear (SWG) drive systems on both the Right Ascension (RA) and Declination (DEC) axes — enabling very good payload-to-mount-weight ratios.
With a payload capacity of up to 44 lb (≈20 kg) without counterweight, and a mount head weight of only about 12.6 lb (≈5.7 kg including the dovetail saddle), it offers a compelling blend of portability and capability.
It is designed for users looking for a serious mount head that remains reasonably portable, while still offering modern features and flexibility.
Key Features
-
Strain-wave gear drives on both RA & DEC – this means very compact gearing, minimal backlash, and improved mechanical precision in a lightweight package.
-
High payload capacity relative to weight – 44 lb (≈20 kg) payload with only ~12.6 lb weight.
-
Dual-mode (AZ/EQ) – the mount head can operate in Alt/Az mode for simpler, faster observing, or Equatorial mode for tracking and GoTo use.
-
Built-in modern control architecture (in “C” models) – The “C” version indicates that the mount has an internal main board, USB-C port, etc. It can be controlled via computer/tablet rather than needing a separate hand-controller.
-
Electronic friction brake & power loss safety features – The mount includes a friction brake to safely stop movement in the event of power interruption, giving added protection to gear and setup.
-
Dual saddle (Vixen + Losmandy-style) – Offers flexibility in mounting optical tubes.
-
Compact & durable build – All-metal, CNC machined body with anodized finish. Designed for field work, portability, and long life.
