The iOptron HEM44EC EQ SWG Hybrid is a high-precision, lightweight hybrid equatorial mount head designed for serious astrophotography and mobile observatory applications. The “EC” version includes a high-resolution encoder on the RA axis for real-time error correction, providing enhanced tracking accuracy.
It combines a strain-wave (harmonic) drive for the RA axis with a backlash-free worm/belt drive system on the DEC axis — hence the “SWG Hybrid” designation (Strain Wave Gear + hybrid drive).
With a payload rating of approximately 20 kg (44 lb) without counterweights, yet a mount weight of only ~6.2 kg (13.65 lb) with saddle, it offers an excellent payload-to-weight ratio.
Key Features
-
Hybrid drive design: RA uses strain-wave gear, DEC uses worm/belt with no backlash.
-
RA high-precision encoder for real-time periodic error correction (RPEC) — supports high tracking accuracy and potentially unguided imaging.
-
Payload capacity 44 lb (20 kg) no counterweights; with recommended payload center of gravity conditions.
-
Ultra-light mount head weight: ~13.65 lb (6.2 kg) including dovetail saddle.
-
CNC-machined all-metal construction, anodized finish for durability.
-
Unique electronic friction brake + power down-memory feature: In event of power loss the mount will safely stop and can resume from its last position/GoTo without full re-alignment.
-
Integrated cable-management system with no external cables wrapping the moving parts; built-in WiFi (via hand controller), USB interface for firmware upgrades and PC/computer control.
-
Supplied with iOptron Go2Nova hand controller (approx. 212,000 object database) and compatibility with ASCOM, INDI drivers, mobile/tablet apps (SkySafari etc).
-
Dual saddle (Vixen & Losmandy-style dovetail) for flexible OTA mounting.
-
Latitude adjustment range ~15° to 65° (some low latitude version available by special order) and azimuth adjustment ±6°.
