The iOptron HAE29C-EC is a lightweight, high-performance dual-mode mount head designed for both Alt-Azimuth (AZ) and Equatorial (EQ) operation (“AZ/EQ Dual”). It employs advanced strain-wave gear (SWG) systems on both axes and features a high-precision encoder on the RA axis (the “EC” designation) for enhanced tracking accuracy.
Despite its small size, the HAE29C-EC offers a compelling payload-to-weight ratio, making it an attractive choice for portable setups or travel rigs.

Key Features

  • Strain-Wave Gear Drive on RA & DEC: Both axes use the SWG technology for compact, backlash-minimized drive operation.
  • High Precision RA Encoder (EC version): The “EC” variant includes the high-resolution encoder on the RA axis to support real-time periodic error correction (RPEC) and improved tracking performance.
  • Dual-Mode Operation (AZ/EQ): Allows setup and use in Alt/Azimuth mode for simpler visual observing or Equatorial mode for tracking and imaging.
  • Impressive Payload vs Weight:
  • Payload: ~13.5 kg (≈29.7 lb) without counterweight.
    • Mount head weight: ~3.7 kg (≈8.15 lb) including dovetail saddle.
  • Build & Construction: All-metal CNC-machined body with black anodized finish for durability and precision.
  • Convenience Features:
  • Built-in WiFi and USB port for firmware updates and computer/tablet control.
    • Electronic friction brake (to safely stop movement in event of power interruption) and power-down memory to resume tracking/go-to without full realignment.

    • Dual saddle (Vixen & Losmandy-D styles) for flexibility in mounting optical tubes.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The low weight and efficient design make this mount well suited for mobile observing or travel astronomy.
