The iOptron HAE29C AZ/EQ Dual SWG is a highly compact, advanced “hybrid” mount head that supports both Alt-Azimuth (AZ) and Equatorial (EQ) modes. It uses strain-wave gear (also known as harmonic drive) on both the Right Ascension (RA) and Declination (DEC) axes — delivering a very favorable payload-to-weight ratio in a small package.
The “C” version indicates built-in WiFi and integrated control board (so you can run it with a tablet or computer rather than a dedicated handset).
With a mount head weight of only about 8.15 lbs (≈3.7 kg including saddle) and a stated payload of up to 29.7 lbs (≈13.5 kg) without counterweight (and up to ~40 lbs/18 kg with optional counterweight), this mount is optimized for portable imaging or grab-and-go setups.
Key Features
-
Strain-wave gear systems on both RA and DEC axes, offering minimal backlash, compact size and good tracking performance.
-
Dual-mode design: switchable between Alt/Az mode (for simpler setup, visual use) and Equatorial mode (for tracking/astrophotography).
-
Built-in WiFi and integrated control board (in “C” version) — allowing control via smartphone/tablet or computer, reducing reliance on a traditional hand controller.
-
USB and 12 V accessory ports built into the saddle to simplify cabling and accessory integration.
-
Electronic friction brake & power-down memory: if power is interrupted, the mount can stop safely and resume tracking or GoTo without full re-alignment.
-
Dual-style dovetail saddle (Vixen & Losmandy) for flexibility in mounting different optical tubes.
-
Very lightweight and compact design, making it ideal for mobile astronomy, field work, or setups where portability is key.
