The iOptron HAE16C is a hybrid alt-azimuth / equatorial mount head (“Dual AZ/EQ”) that employs a strain-wave gear (SWG) design on the RA/azimuth axis and a backlash-free worm/belt system on the DEC/altitude axis.
It’s designed for portability, flexibility (switching between AZ and EQ mode), modern control connectivity (WiFi, USB-C, ASCOM/INDI), and a robust yet lightweight build.
In short: a travel-friendly mount that punches above its weight.
Key Features
-
Compact & lightweight: Mount head weighs approximately 5.7 lb (≈2.6 kg).
-
Respectable payload capacity: Up to ~18 lb (~8.2 kg) without counterweight; with optional counterweight shaft and weight, up to ~26.5 lb (~12 kg).
-
Hybrid drive system: RA uses strain-wave gear (high ratio, compact design) and DEC uses a backlash-free worm/belt system — combining advantages of both.
-
Dual mode operation: Can be used in AZ (alt-azimuth) mode for visual observing or in EQ (parallactic/equatorial) mode for tracking more traditionally, offering flexibility in setup.
-
Modern connectivity: Built-in WiFi, USB-C ports (one on base, one on dovetail saddle) for firmware upgrades, computer/telescope control, and mobile device apps.
-
Safety & convenience features: Electronic friction brake on the RA axis (in the event of power interruption the mount can stop safely). Zero-position search/locator built in.
-
Durable construction: All-metal, cast + CNC machined body with black anodized finish for rugged use.
-
Saddle: Vixen-style dovetail saddle (compatible with Vixen-type plates; other adapters may be used).
-
Support for computer-control: Compatible with iOptron Commander software, ASCOM (Windows), INDI (Mac/Linux) and mobile apps like SkySafari via WiFi.
-
Tripod / counterweight optional: The head itself is sold alone (tripod/pier and counterweights often not included) — giving you flexibility in building your rig.
