The iOptron CEM40EC Mount Head is the enhanced “EC” version of the popular CEM40 series. It retains the impressive payload-to-weight ratio of the original but adds high-resolution encoders (“EC” = “Encoder/Control”) for real-time periodic error correction and finer pointing/tracking precision.

In essence: a robust, precision equatorial mount head built for serious applications — yet still relatively portable.

Key Features

  • Center‐Balanced Design: The “CEM” (Center Balanced Equatorial Mount) architecture places the optical tube’s centre of gravity over the tripod/pier axis, reducing torque and improving stability vs many traditional offset mounts.

  • High Payload Capacity: Rated for up to 40 lb (≈18 kg) of payload (excluding counterweights).

  • Low Mount Weight: The mount head weighs only ~15.8 lb (7.2 kg) in some configurations for the EC version.

  • High Precision Encoders & Corrections: The EC version includes high-resolution encoders for “Real-time periodic error correction with high resolution encoder (RPEC)”.

  • Premium Build & Materials: All‐metal, CNC machined construction with anodized finish (red/black).

  • Dual Saddle: Accepts both Losmandy and Vixen style dovetail plates for broad compatibility.

  • Advanced GoTo & Control Features:

    • Included hand-controller (Go2Nova series) with large object database.

    • ST-4 autoguide port, USB communication, optional WiFi adapter (on some versions) for computer/remote control.

  • Hard Case Option: Some kit versions include a hard carry case for the mount head, aiding transport and storage.

Technical Specifications (Highlights)

  • Mount Type: Center Balanced Equatorial (CEM)

  • Max Payload: 40 lb (18 kg) excluding counterweight

  • Mount Head Weight: ~15.8 lb (7.2 kg) to ~17.4 lb (7.9 kg) depending version.

  • Tracking Accuracy/Periodic Error: For non-EC version < ±7 arcsec typical; EC version claims “PE < 0.3 arc seconds RMS” thanks to encoders.

  • Motor/Drive: Precision stepper motors, synchronous belt transmission in many specs.

  • Saddle: Dual Losmandy/Vixen style dovetail.

  • Guides/Ports: ST-4 autoguide, USB port, GPS in some configurations.
