Tele Vue 5X Powermate PMT-5126 – 1.25" High Magnification Image Amplifier
The Tele Vue 5X Powermate is a top-tier optical amplifier designed for exceptional performance in both visual and imaging applications. A perfect choice for eyeglass wearers, this compact yet powerful accessory works seamlessly with all 1.25" eyepieces and diagonals.
Key Features:
- High Magnification with Clarity: Delivers a true 5x amplification with virtually no image degradation or vignetting.
- Designed for Eyeglass Wearers: Maintains eye relief, making it a standout choice for observers with glasses.
- Precision Construction: Fully multi-coated optics, blackened lens edges, and internal anti-reflection threads maximize contrast and clarity.
- CCD & Film Ready: Ideal for long-focus imaging setups — replaces the need for complex eyepiece projection.
- Threaded for Filters: Accepts standard 1.25" filters for even greater flexibility.
Why Choose a Powermate Over a Traditional Barlow?
Powermates™ use a four-element telecentric design (a positive and a negative doublet) that virtually eliminates common Barlow issues such as vignetting, edge field aberrations, and pupil shift. This makes them superior in performance—especially with long focal length eyepieces and for solar Hydrogen-alpha viewing.
Unique Benefits:
- Telecentric Operation: Essential for optimal Hydrogen-alpha filter performance (e.g., Daystar).
- Parfocal Use: Maintains focus consistency across eyepieces (nearly parfocal).
- Constant Magnification: Except for the 5x model (which increases 1x per 35mm of image distance), Powermates™ offer steady amplification even when imaging.
- Imaging Excellence: Outstanding for both CCD and film photography; widely used in high-resolution planetary imaging.
- Secure Design: Chrome barrels include safety undercuts, captive lock screws, and filter threads.
Imaging With Powermates™
Powermates™ shine in planetary imaging — used singly or stacked, they provide the increased image scale needed to capture fine solar system detail without eyepiece projection. With Tele Vue T-Ring Adapters, cameras can be securely mounted directly to the Powermate lens assembly for compact, high-power imaging setups.

Optimized Magnification for Astro-Imagers
The chart above illustrates the effective magnification of each Powermate™ model (2x, 2.5x, 4x, and 5x) based on the distance between the top surface of the Powermate™ and the imaging plane (CCD or film).
1¼" Powermates™: 2.5x & 5x
Compact and efficient, these models extend less than 3" from the focuser and are parfocal with all standard 1¼" diagonals and prisms. The 5x version also supports 1¼" threaded filters. Their design makes them a superior upgrade over traditional Barlows when used with smaller diagonals and compact refractors like the Tele Vue-60.
The 5x Powermate™ delivers approximately 7.7x magnification, making it a top choice for high-magnification CCD or film astrophotography. It's also an excellent tool for slowing the focal ratio in Hydrogen-alpha solar observation setups.
2" Powermates™: 2x & 4x
Ideal for use with 2" star diagonals, these Powermates™ maintain near-parfocal performance and accept standard 48mm filters. They are compatible with all 1¼" and 2" eyepieces, including premium models like the 31mm Nagler Type 5.
Each unit features brass clamp rings for secure eyepiece retention, and the 2" eyepiece housing can be removed to attach an optional T-ring adapter — perfect for streamlined CCD or camera setups.
The 4x version particularly shines when paired with long eye-relief eyepieces. For example, using a 35mm Panoptic with this model gives the effective focal length of 8.8mm while retaining 25mm of eye relief. Since Powermates™ are not Barlows, the usual Panoptic-Barlow Interface isn't required. They also insert fully into 2" star diagonals with minimal refocusing.
Compatibility Note for Dobsonian/Newtonian Users
When using a Tele Vue Paracorr coma corrector:
- Insert the 2.5x or 5x Powermate™ into the Paracorr’s 1¼" adapter before the eyepiece.
- For the 2x and 4x 2" Powermates™, place the Powermate™ into the focuser first, followed by the Paracorr.
