The Urban Observatory
The turret design for the Urban Observatory evolved to accommodate my tall stature and need to satisfy local building codes and neighbors’ concerns for an unsightly “silo” like structure in our suburban hamlet.
The Urban Observatory meets the needs of my personal height without having a tall base structure and the modernistic streamline profile is pleasing to the eye of my neighbors who often invite their guests to a tour of “our” neighborhood wonder.
I had researched various designs, materials, and building methods. Most modest sized dome owners find themselves uncomfortable with strained neck and back muscles and with bruised heads from the arc that is all around that design. The Urban Observatory’s vertical sides provide more head room and access around ones equipment.
With time and warmer temperatures plastics such as polyethylene tend to sag and warp leading to endless adjustment to the rotation system as well as transmitting daytime heat into the equipment space resulting in condensation forming on the walls and a prolonged cool down period for the telescope equipment.
Fiberglass when applied correctly is rigid yet does transfer heat, condensates, will eventually sag and, polyester resin does degrade throughout from UV rays. The Urban Observatory employs hardwood plywood which is a natural insulation, does not condensate, sag, or degrade when properly sealed.
The plywood is highly protected with marine grade epoxy systems that seal out moisture and marine grade polyurethane outer coatings for reflecting heat and UV rays. It is easily maintained with soapy water.
The Urban Observatory rotation system uses a unique steel rail on captive fixed wheels designed to absorb the expanding and contracting of its simple steel counterpart. Once aligned it is always aligned with hassle free easy turning with very little effort.
The baffle system between the base ring and the turret deflects windblown rain and serves for dry ventilation.
The Urban Observatory can be built from six to ten feet in diameter with any aperture size limited only by the base ring diameter.
Remote controls, rotation and shutter motors of most any manufacturer can be fitted to The Urban Observatory.

Rotation control can be achieved with all major manufacturers systems.
Shutter control is approximately $1000 additional priced according to aperture and diameter of dome.
